Garden lighting without wiring: how to light a garden with no cable
No trenches, no circuit breakers, no electrical certificate. Solar lights now handle what used to need an electrician: a path, a bed, a terrace, an entrance — and they move the moment you change your mind.

Why skip fixed wiring in a garden
Permanent garden wiring means a trench, conduit, weather-rated sockets and an inspection. In a finished garden it also means digging up lawns and beds. Solar lights need none of it — you push them into the soil and you are done.
The second advantage is freedom. A perennial bed looks different every year, and the lighting can follow it in under a minute.
How many lights a garden needs
- Path: one light every 1.5–2 m along one side only — it looks far more natural than two rows.
- Bed: three to five lights placed irregularly beat a straight line.
- Terrace: two to four low lights around the edges; keep the bright one on the table.
- Entrance and gate: one strong piece that is visible from the street.
- Rule of thumb: fewer bright lights, more soft ones. A garden is not a car park.
Placement mistakes to avoid
The panel has to see the sky during the day — that is the only condition a solar light has. Under a roof overhang, inside a dense hedge or below a conifer it never charges, and the evening looks like a fault.
- Do not aim a light at your own windows or at a neighbour's.
- On steps, light the edge of the tread rather than the eye level.
- Leave clear space around the spike so the mower and strimmer cannot catch it.
- In winter, move lights out of the path of snow sliding off a roof.
What a solar light will not do
A solar light is decorative and orientational, not a work floodlight. To light a driveway for a camera or a workshop, fixed power still makes sense. For atmosphere, paths and beds, solar wins — and it costs nothing to run.
